Four thousand kilometers? Not an obstacle for Ukrainian EYPers!
This far away from the residence of EYP-Ukraine, in Portuguese city of Evora, the XXIV National Selection Conference of EYP-Portugal took place (April 29 – May 01, 2011). The event gathered around 50 pupils from six different schools who competed for the right to represent their country at the International Session in Zagreb, Croatia. Two Ukrainian Chaipersons – Evheniia Melekhovets and Anna Suprunenko – were actively helping them to achieve their goal.
Not only was the format of the session non-trivial (the resolutions were prepared in advance therefore a lot of attention during the CW was paid to debating the opponents’ resolutions), but the topics suggested were of great interest to discuss. Such issues as Japan nuclear crisis and environmental refugee, Libyan war, stem cells research, feminine genital mutilation, Wikileaks ethics were touched upon at the GA.
Needless to say that the Portuguese organisers demonstrated the high level of performance – the relaxed atmosphere of the whole session is the proof. Such kind of mood was fostered by the Session President Jose Alguien, who symbolically took off his tie during the welcoming speech at the Opening Ceremony, and the speech which was one of the brightest one can experience.
The way Portuguese Euro-village was organised pleasantly surprised us. Delegations brought sophisticated dishes and were all dressed up in the national costumes. What is more, they even staged theatrical performance. At the Euro-concert, which was prepared week in advance, one could hardly stop admiring delegates playing violin and saxophone.
Portuguese people and the session proved to be as warm as their country itself.
